Kartaal and Manjeera lessons
Manjeera/Manjira/Kartaal is a pair of small hand cymbals made of
metal. Usually it is bell metal or pancha loha. This is a special
traditional instrument that makes a sweet tinkling sound when
struck. It is associated with devotion and religious ceremonies
especially bhajans. Manjeera is found on the temple walls dating
back to the ancient times. It is connected with a small rope that
passes thru the hole in the center of each disk. It is struck in
various places to create different pitch and sound.
Literal meaning of kartaal is Kar=hand taal=rythm. It is also made
of wood with small metal discs attached to the end of the each
wooden piece. It is played with one hand clapping the wood pieces
together in rhythm to make the music. It is very
popular among saints and seers and found in vedic paintings played
with joy and ecstasy.
