“Music is the universal language of mankind.”
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Veena is a divine string instrument with melodious sound. We offer Veena lessons to children and adults (minimum age 6 no maximum). Vocals are also taught along with veena. Students are taught fingering techniques to play along with raga and tala. We offer 4 classes a month. If there is a 5th week in the month, there is no class that week. Class is 45 minutes long.
We offer group and one on one lessons. We start with 1-on-1 classes until the student is ready to fit into a group. There are a maximum of five people in a group, and if the groups are larger we have two teachers.
Fees are paid at the beginning of each month. Learn more about tuition here.
FAQ
What does the veena look like?
The veena is about four feet in length. Its design consists of a large resonator kundam carved and hollowed out of a log, usually jackwood or any other locally available wood. A tapering hollow neck called dandi is topped with 24 brass or bell-metal frets set in scalloped black wax. The yali is a tuning box culminating in a downward curve and an ornamental dragons head.
What is Sarasvati Veena?
The Sarasvati veena, also known as Raghunath veena, is an Indian string instrument. It is named after the Hindu goddess Sarasvati, who is usually depicted holding or playing the instrument.
What are the other types of veena?
If the veena is built from a single piece of wood, then it is called ekanda veena. If not, then it is called kanda veena or ottu veena. Nowadays, there are electric veena and veenas with guitar pegs.
How do I buy a veena?
We recommend ordering online. Once the payment is processed, the veena comes to your doorstep in 10 to 15 days. If you already have a veena, we can start lessons as soon as we schedule them.
What else do I need?
You will need a metronome and a three ring binder with sheet protectors to hold music notes. Bring the binder to every class.
